National Champion Ben Finemore

New Zealand Speedway's youngest ever National Champion, Ben Finemore, has secured a sprint car drive in his new home town of Brisbane. Ben moved there last year and has been canvassing the car owners at the Archerfield track, just south of Brisbane, and his efforts have now paid off with a ride in a good car. Ben has had a couple of squirts in a midget at Archerfield earlier in the season but last Saturday night he started his sprint car campaign in earnest. Ben's Dad, Gary, flew out to be on Ben's crew and to offer support and will returned on Sunday. We will let you know the results of Ben's progress in this column each week.

Targa Rally

Some of our staff and regular competitors were away last week on the Targa Rally. They had mixed success, if you call hitting trees, rolling and just wrecking their cars, success. Assistant Steward Brendon Pratt hit a tree and went down a bank. Gary Finemore rolled his Fiat and Brent Emerson's Commodore looked as though it had been in a demolition derby, not a rally, by the end of the event. Sprint Car driver, Ben Quin, was also away on the Targa and makes his season debut at Baypark Speedway tonight.

Leading rookie Justin Allgaier

Super Saloon driver, American Justin Allgaier, who raced here a few years ago as a 17 year old, started his new job in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driving for Roger Penske in February. With just a few races to go in his first season, Justin is fifth in points and is the leading rookie making him a strong contender for the Rookie of the Year honours. It seems he is destined for the big time - watch this space.

Exams for two of our competitors

It has been a busy time for a couple of our competitors. Apart from thinking about the start of the speedway season Stock Car driver, Ian Daniel and Saloon Car driver, Michelle Wymer, have been sitting exams for their Mechanical Engineering Degrees at University. Michelle attends Waikato University and Ian is at Canterbury University where he is also furthering his representative hockey career.
